Out of Mind, Into Body
Commissioned by The Society for New Music.
Out of Mind, Into Body is a virtuosic work in that it calls for patience, stamina, and clearly applied extended techniques unique to the bass clarinet. This is, however, not the limitation of the work as the clear tonalities and motivic connections (that unify the otherwise contrasting sections) throughout the work encourage expressive flexibility often applied to, say, Western music of the 19th century.
The form of the work is a simple A-B-A (slow-fast-slow) structure.
Originally composed as a soliloquy of sorts for bass clarinet with dancers, Out of Mind, Into Body was composed for The Society for New Music’s 2017 Vision of Sound: (making) PLACE concerts. It was premiered by John Friedrichs, with choreography by Cheryl Wilkins-Mitchell on February 17, 2017 in Syracuse, NY.
Out of Mind, Into Body was completed on November 7, 2016. Its duration is approximately 11’30”.
