Duration: 7 Minutes, 20 Seconds
Making use of the full tonal range of the instrument both a lyrically and dramatically, Monologue parallels a soliloquy in which the performer expresses their innermost thoughts aloud to the audience, offering a perspective, in this case, of the expressive possibilities of the instrument in a gradually developing melodic line in the context of a neo-Romantic sensibility.
Monologue is the second of two solo works for baritone saxophone composed for Arno Bornkamp in support of his multimedia-concert about new music for the baritone saxophone, Little Big Horn. The source material derives directly from the first of these works, entitled Monology.
Monologue was completed on July 30, 2020 in Potsdam, NY. It is approximately 7’20’’ in duration.
