Blue Horo
Duration: 4 Minutes, 30 Seconds
Blue Horo combines stylistic characteristics of the Bulgarian horo with those of the American blues. Rhythmically, the work is derived from the Petrunino horo, which divides the 12/8 meter into groups of 3+4+2+3. This asymmetrical division of an otherwise symmetrical meter is used consistently throughout the work in mostly four-bar units to create formal divisions harmonically and phrasally based on a 12-bar blues. The melodic material is derived from bi-modal scale structures typical of the horo while the tonal and harmonic relationships throughout the work are derived from the standard blues progressions. The result is a dancingly virtuosic, highly rhythmic piece for solo violin.
Blue Horo was completed on July 8, 2013.
