Rare and Unusual Saxophones
A Performance and Historical Perspective with David Decker and Marcel W. Helland.
Sat Oct 26 2019 at 07:00 pm to 09:00 pm
Bellingham Wind Works, 2405 Meridian St, Bellingham, Washington 98225
Come and see in-person examples, live demonstrations, and historical context of extraordinarily unique members of the saxophone family, from some of the largest saxophones to the smallest, including a live disassembly of an Eppelsheim Soprillo saxophone by David Decker, the lead repair technician at Bellingham Wind Works.
The Soprillo is the smallest and highest member of the saxophone family, with a number of innovative design elements not seen on any other saxophone, such as special venting mechanisms, dual-purpose keywork, and an octave key on the side of the mouthpiece.
Saxophones that will be shown include Soprillo, Sopranino, Saxello, F-Mezzo Soprano, Buescher Straight Alto, C-Melody, Bass, and Contrabass, as well as live performances on the Straight Alto Saxophone of Hindemith’s Konzertstück for two Alto Saxophones and Gregory Wanamaker’s Duo Sonata for Clarinet and Alto Saxophone.
This event is free and open to the public. It is not limited to saxophone players.
