Altohoro is derived from the Petrunino horo of Bulgaria, which divides a 12/8 meter into groups of 3+4+2+3.This asymmetrical division of an otherwise symmetrical meter is used consistently throughout the work in mostly four-bar units to create formal divisions harmonically and phrasally based on American popular music. The melodic material is derived from bi-modal scale structures typical of the horo while the tonal and harmonic relationships throughout the work are derived from simpler, tonal harmonic progressions.The result is a dancingly virtuosic, highly rhythmic piece for solo viola.
