Memories from the XVIII World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb

I had a wonderful time in Zagreb at the World Saxophone Congress July 11-14, 2018! I saw old friends, made new ones, and participated in rehearsals and masterclasses of my music, and heard beautiful performances of my music and more by some of the best musicians on the planet.

Here is a brief summary in photos and captions:

Tuesday, July 10: Scotty Phillips and Sara Eastwood performed the European premiere of Ragahoro Breakdown in Lhotka Recital Hall at the Zagreb Academy of Music. I’m excited to work with them again at the American Single Reed Summit this October in a presentation about my duos for clarinet and saxophone. Stay tuned for details…

Thursday, July 12: Duo Montagnard performed the European premiere of Taking Turns in Lhotka Recital Hall at the Zagreb Academy of Music. Joe and Matt also recorded this work for their next compact disc. Look for it this fall!

Thursday, July 12: Jean-Michel Goury and Friends presented the World Premiere of Still Life: Loïe Dances as the opener of “The Night of Claude Debussy – A Triptych with Music and About Music.”

Unfortunately, this performance was not recorded, but here is an excerpt taken from a rehearsal:

Friday, July 13: I had the pleasure of participating in a masterclass led by Dr. Frederick Hemke, who coached the UK-based saxophonist Jonathan Radford in a performance of of Light and Shadows in Bersa Hall at the Zagreb Academy of Music. This was great fun and Jonathan’s performance was terrific!

Friday, July 13: The brilliant Jessica Maxfield gave a stunningly beautiful performance of of Light and Shadows with Hannah Creviston in Huml Recital Hall at the Zagreb Academy of Music.

Jessica is performing my music again this summer and fall in and around Los Angeles. Don’t miss any opportunity to hear her expressive performances!

Saturday, July 14: My dear friends Stephen Page and Hannah Creviston gave an energetic and brilliant premiere performance of my new work for soprano saxophone and piano, Night Set, in Stančić Hall.

The hall was packed, and I nearly missed the performance, but the crowd was patient and thoroughly enjoyed their virtuosic and beautifully expressive performance.

…and no saxophone gathering is complete without a Wanamaker/McAllister reunion!

Or an opportunity to photobomb…

Stay tuned for more…
